“Market Day” comprises a marquetry picture with acrylic paints. The picture was crafted using fine veneers and burrs cut to shape and glued onto 15mm (5/8”) thick chipboard with a resin wood adhesive. The picture, including the integral veneered frame, measures 737mm x 838mm (29” x 33”). The veneered surfaces were sanded smooth and sealed with acrylic matt medium to ensure the subsequent acrylic colours formed a secure paint film. The picture is protected with two coats of acrylic gloss varnish. It was signed and dated by ‘glesca artist’ William Neilly in December 2014. “Market Day” was inspired by a painting by Henry Charles Bryant (1835 – 1915) entitled, “The Vegetable Market”. Bryant was a portrait and landscape painter who specialized in farmyard and market scenes which were noted for their great attention to detail. His work was frequently exhibited between 1860 and 1880 at the Royal Academy of Arts, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists. His paintings are highly sought after today.

"Market Day" shows that you are a rather versatile chappie, glesca artist. Glesca street scenes, esoteric Masonic mysticism, and noo a rustic version of the Barras. Great stuff. As Foster has said, being able to capture reality, or create your own, and get it down on canvas or whatever medium, is a wonderful gift.

Marquetry is the art and craft of making pictures using fine veneers and burrs of wood glued to a backing board. I began producing marquetry pictures in the mid 1980s after watching a television programme on the subject. I joined the Marquetry Society in January 1987 and exhibited two of my pictures at the 1990 National Marquetry Exhibition held in Bexley, Kent. Both my exhibits, "The Eagle" - 24" x 24" (610mm x 610mm) and "The Haycart" - 36" x 27" (910mm x 685mm), shown below, gained "Highly Commended" awards in the Beginners Class. As the picture finishing has deteriorated over time I've now had to re-do the finish on most of my pictures. I thought you might be interested in seeing some of my marquetry work.

It's wonderful how you can make such creations from slivers of wood, gleca artist. I have enough problems trying to draw matchstick men.

I've been searching for 5yrs. for a sketch of Nethan Street, Govan, in the 1950's. The tenements are all gone now. Do you know that area or can you find me a sketch from your own work. I know it's a big ask, but it's for my Family History and that's the last thing I need to complete it. I've just re-joined so I'll go now and look at your other work.

Nethan Street, Govan was located off Golspie Street and was between Harmony Row and Harhill Street. Virtual Mitchell has only one image of 3 Nethan Street, taken in 1936. The photo attached shows Telfer's Fish and Poultry shop beside The Arrow Library where books could be borrowed without deposit for 2d per week. You can purchase prints of this photo directly from Virtual Mitchell. Hope this is helpful for your family history project. If you double click the thumbnail the photo will enlarge.

Spent most of the day replacing the images of all my paintings on the MB that Photobucket.com deleted unless I pay their ransom fee of $399.99 each year for the privilege of 3rd party hosting. I got a couple of day's notice of their intention before my images were deleted. This action is causing a lot of concern amongst Photobucket customers who have been posting images on forums and other media sites free of charge over the past fourteen years. Flickr, Dropbox, Google Photo and many others offer sharing of your images for no charge. However the image is not shown on the forum. Instead, a link to your account is displayed on the forum to enable viewers to access your account to view and comment on your images. Fortunately I learned that www.postimages.org still provides 3rd party image hosting for free. According to their website, "Postimages was founded in 2004 to provide message boards with an easy way to upload images for free. Postimages is a very simple, fast and reliable free image service. It's perfect for linking to auctions, message boards, blogs and other websites. Postimages guarantees maximum uptime and performance so that your image will be here whenever you need it. There is no registration or login; all you have to do is submit your picture. With continuous upgrades and dedicated staff Postimages is the #1 solution for Free Image Hosting."
