he lives in Burnside now but is still very active in Brigton raising money via the Bridgeton Business Club for various good causes especially stuff for local schools and youth clubs.
He has a fabulous library of old Brigton photies and slide shows. The book is very good

After what I thought was a so so beginning and a wee bit confusing with going back and forwards in time, this is developing into a good read. Unlike some other authors who are not originally from the area they are writing about Bill Shackleton's geography and place names etc are really good. Some really good photos too. One right across from my wee Granny's hoose.

Bill Shackleton wites (page 100) of the irony that while in decades past in a socially harsh world, good manners mattered and for example men never swore at home whereas in today's softer living social context vulgarity and coarseness prevail. A sobering and extremely interesting thought even though the author may be adopting an ever so slightly romantic view of the past. Plenty to think about there. I have to say that this romantic, almost idyllic view of past decades was one I shared until very recently] now I am not so sure. Pity Mr Shackleton is not on this site, potential for a very good discussion about old Brigton.

Some of the stories in this book are hilarious though most would not have been funny at the time of their happening.
Webmaister, Did you get my E mail asking for Bill Shackleton's E mail address? I want to contact him?

Bill's recall of talking with a Communist under the 'Umbrella' at Bridgeton Cross and the approach of an Orange Band at the same time is priceless and for me anyway speaks volumes about Communists.

Well John if you have not seen the book in question it will be vague to you but it goes like this.
The author relates a wee story about how he was once standing under the famous Brigton Umbrella at the Cross listening to a fervent Communist spouting the Gospel according to Lenin at him when an Orange Band Parade approached. At that the Communist stopped his preaching and it seems wanted to join in with the merriment approaching them. Now my point is that Communists are supposed to be ABOVE all this sectarian crap. Its supposed to be brotherhood of man and all that nonsense. Aye right!
