:D This study of the two lions guarding the Hamilton Mausoleum uses a limited watercolour palette of the three primary colours - blue, red and yellow. The paintings are on Bockingford watercolour acid free paper (300gsm/140lbs) measuring 305 x 225mm (12"x9") and 280 x 254mm (11"x10"). They were signed and dated by me in early 2006 and are some of my first paintings using watercolour. :D

:D My painting of the "Citizens Theatre"was commissioned by Glesca Pal Joyce who particularly wanted Des Dillion's, "Singin' I'm No A Billy He's A Tim" on the billboards as this played at the theatre in June 2009. The poster shows Scott Kyle as "Billy" and Colin Little as "Tim". It is painted using acrylic on canvas board measuring 508 x 406 mm (20" x 16") and is protected by two coats of gloss varnish. It was signed and dated by me in August 2009. :D

:'( Winnie was adopted by my daughter Vivienne from the Cats Protection on 18 February 2006. It was reckoned that Winnie was three years of age. She was a feral cat who lived around DiMaggio's Restaurant in Hamilton. She had been knocked down in 2004 and sustained injuries that left her blind in the left eye, a broken left leg, broken pelvis and sternum. Winnie later became deaf and died on 21 September 2009 from cancer of the bowel and pancreas. She was buried beside Tendi, Nutty, Ebony and Patz in my back garden. This drawing using graphite on extra smooth Bristol Board was completed, signed and dated by me in September 2009. :'(

It's an excellent idea. A first step might well be sitting down with a grandchild and a tape-recorder to give the grandchild your "oral history." I sat down with my own mother, back in 1986, and recorded her memories of growing up in Glesga and surviving the bombing in WWII etc, and eventually printed the transcript in our wee magazine, The Folk Life (it's now up on the web, at www.thedigitalfolklife.org along with an oral history I did with my wife's father, who grew up in rural Pennsylvania, living thro those years too, and serving in the South Pacific in the US Army); this isn't as elaborate as what Trotsky is planning, and I'd definitely encourage people to follow thro with him. You won't be sorry.

:D Prior to 1821, when the first bridge was built, and since Roman times there was a ford across the River Clyde close to where Dalmarnock Bridge stands today. The earliest history of Dalmarnock is strongly associated with the Ford. In medieval times it was probably used by the masons who helped build Glasgow Catherdral as they travelled to and from Rutherglen. Mary Queen of Scots is alleged to have used Dalmarnock Ford as she fled south following her defeat at the Battle of Langside in 1568.

My painting, "Dalmarnock Ford" shows how the ford might have looked in the early 19th century as a four-horse drawn carriage takes travellers across the river from Rutherglen. The painting using acrylic on canvas board measures 406 x 305mm (approx. 16"x12"). It was signed and dated by me in October 2009. :D

:o More examples of paintings by glesca artist can be seen on his web site www.glescapals.com/profiles/wneilly.htm which was designed by Webmaister himself. :o

Hi there Dazzle, just to say ta much for bringing me a copy of Chasin' that Carrot to the hoose party.
I do not read much these days, do not seem to have the time, so the only two books I have read recently are your two.
I sat down after lunch on Tuesday, and did not move till I had finished Chasin' that Carrot, I can honestly say I could not put it down till I had finished it.
Thank you very much and I look forward to the next?

Dalmarnock Tollhouse

The first bridge across the River Clyde at Dalmarnock was built in 1821 by the Road Trustees. This was a wooden "pay" bridge and a tollhouse was built at 556 Dalmarnock Road, opposite its junction with Springfield Road, around 1820 to collect the toll for traffic using the bridge and the road between Dalmarnock and Rutherglen. The tollhouse, famous for its chimney above the front door, was latterly used as commercial premises and a doctor's surgery. The building was only recently demolished as part of the redevelopment of Dalmarnock.

My painting shows the tollhouse as it might have looked in the early 19th century with Carters stopping to pay their dues after crossing Dalmarnock Bridge from Rutherglen which is depicted in the background.

8-) glesca artist can bring to life your favourite black and white photograph at a very reasonable cost. Why don't you contact me and ask for a quote ???

Your Life Story - written for you

Telling your life story is an exclusive personal service that is designed to help you talk about your own unique life story.

Your life journey and stories are told by you, recorded and written up by IAN STEVENSON (GlescaPal Trotsky), then produced and printed as a book that you can use as a gift to others or treasure for whatever purpose.

Everyone has a life story to tell.
Looking back, wouldn’t it have been good if your father and mother’s life stories could have been preserved, and before them their parents.
In most cases all we are left with is a few patchy, vague and diminishing memories and some fading family photographs. But now, as you yourself get older and the memory begins to blur at the edges you can capture your own unique life story to be kept by you to reflect back on in quieter moments or shared with others to make a unique and lasting gift for family, friends and future generations.

For the ultimate in free, downloadable Bible software, try this address:

http://www.e-sword.net/index.html

Free electronic version of the King James Bible, available in various language interfaces. There are also numerous other free versions of the Bible to download in addition to the standard King James version. You can have the New Testament in Greek, the Revised Version, and lotsa other versions, the vast majority of which are free. (Only items with a dollar sign $ against them require payment, and these are few)

In addition to the various Bibles you can download Bible dictionaries, commentaries, graphics, etc, etc, and again the vast majority of the downloads are free.

The site is run by a dedicated Christian, who has obviously spent a great deal of time and effort over the years in writing and maintaining this sofware, but even if you're agnostic, like masel, it's still a great resource for anyone interested in religion.

Here's a new one from Robert Douglas, that smashing author of Night Song of the Last Tram. Fiction from Robert this time about 12 families resident in a tenement close in Maryhill, early fifties. For all us tenement dwellers of that time it will be reality to us and I think a must read. Came out on hardback 3rd Sept - paperback March next year - dont miss it.

PS Tried to include this on the Glesga books thread but no link for a ' new thread ' or at least ah couldnae find it. ;D ;D

:D M C Escher's waterfall depicts a watercourse that flows in a zigzag along the long sides of two elongated Penrose triangles (the impossible triangle) so that it ends up two storeys higher than it began. The resulting waterfall, forming the short sides of both triangles drives the mill water wheel. In this optical illusion, the water can run endlessly and keep spinning the mill wheel. ;D

My rendering of Escher's waterfall is painted using acrylic on canvas board measuring 400 x 300mm (16" x 12"). The painting is protected by two coats of satin varnish and was signed and dated by me.

:D If you have a favourite optical illusion that you would like me to paint contact me by email. :D

:D My painting "Sunset Over Mallaig" was painted using acrylic on canvas board measuring approx. 400 x 300mm (16" x12") from a photograph taken by me in 1967. It is for sale. :D

Mallaig, a fishing village, is located on the north west coast of Scotland. The view is from the hills behind the "white city" and looks down across Mallaig bay towards the harbour. The sun sets behind the Isle of Skye, a 15 minute ferry ride, across the Sound of Sleat. The Cuillin Hills of Skye are shown in the background.

Don’t be put off by the title.

“Going for Broke on Jesus” is not a religious book in as much as stained glass windows, high church and ceremony is concerned. It is the true moving story of how a Glaswegian’s childlike faith in Jesus restored a broken home and turned beer bottles into furniture.

Bob Park was brought up in a Glasgow slum. He left school aged fourteen and served a five year apprenticeship as a Painter and Decorator before joining the Scots Guards on duty at Buckingham Palace.
On leaving the Scots Guards he was a Prison Officer at Barlinnie Prison, Glasgow then a Police Officer. He left the Police and ended up in the gutter through alcohol abuse.

In the early nineties Bob founded the U.K. registered charity ROM-Aid International through which he transported some £12,000,000 (twelve million) of humanitarian aid to Romania over a sixteen year period. This resulted in the building of a new 'Accident & Emergency Department' for a local run down hospital, a 'Christian Community Centre' and a 'Hospice' for terminally ill HIV infected children.

priced at £8.50p with free postage to anywhere in the world.

Hi Pals, I guess I may be the last person to have read Dazzles book but I want to tell you how much I enjoyed it.
Most of the book being set in Possil and Milton, makes me feel as if I have lived some of the chapters.
Some of the characters I have tried comparing them to folk who lived in Milton, I think we all knew folk like them.

If you haven't read it get a copy I am positive you will enjoy it.
I have ordered the follow up, I want to see how Linda gets on life

Bye for now.

Davy, I envy you! To be able to tell the story of your life and times that any Glaswegian can relate to, all in verse, is truly a serious gift! Your book is so unique, it will go down in history and be talked about for years to come, excellent work, well done! ;D

Hi Jamesy, thanks for that, fair praise indeed from a fellow author.

I really envy you and Avril you know. I tried to write OTW in prose and failed miserably. I have always had a knack for verse so I found writing the stories that way much easier. I choose the word verse as opposed to poetry as I feel as soon as the "P" word comes out, barriers are erected high and wide.

Anyway I thank you both for taking the time out to review my book, I am very grateful and I wish you both well with your own publications.

I have reviewed Davy's book as he requested.

A very enjoyable book with Davy's memories of growing up in the east-end put into verse. I feel in fact that this is the book's main strength, the ability to put everyday situations into very good verse and to relate contrasting memories, from the funny to the sad in this way. This is exemplified especially in pages 34-35 and the part of the book 'My Pal Hugh' about one of Davy's school boy friends who was killed in a raod accident. Contrast this with the at times humorous account, 'The Accident,' about Davy's memory of Skipping the fare on the old trams. Contrasting situations but both related in the same way in very good verse.

There are many instances of Davy comparing life then with life now and there is a very stong and clear yearning for an era now long gone and a way of life that will never return.
For instance on page 11,
"We would all play and never get bored
and as much as a holiday that we could afford
we never had costumes we never had trunks
and never bothered by perverts or drunks."

And, more pointedly on page 39
"The character of the city has been lost forever
particularly the streets either side of the river
with cul-de-sacs and one way system
if you blink going past your sure to miss them."

I think this exceptionally good verse and sums up really what the author feels about the world that we have lost. It comes over strongly in the stories that Davy regrets the passing of a different way of life
Likewise Davy demonstrates how thing have changed in certain situations that were taken for granted then but would be loked upon in a very different light today.
Pages 42-43, The Watchie, relating to boyhood memories of being in the hut of a watchman with his pals.
"The fire was a magnet on a winter's night
like moths to alamp that was burning bright
we all snuggled up in the watchie's hut
very late at night when all was shut
the watchman made the pefect host
he opened aloaf and we all made toast
sadly if the watchman did this today
PC would come and take him away."

Police constable and Poltically correct I reckon Davy.
(Two PC'S really.) ;D ;D ;D ;D
Another main strengh of the book is that the stories relate to situations that most people can identify with, these having been part of their upbringing. For instance the experience of poverty and deprivation. In The Ragman page 41 describing the anticipated ritual of the visit of the Ragman.
"With great anticipation they stood in line
Eyes fixed on the ragman all of the time
no pounds or ounces of imperial measure ]
just a bundle of rags foe unlimited treasure
though I could only stand and stare
we never seemed to have rags to spare
now looking back and assessing the facts
all of the rags were on our backs."

Finally, the humour. Page 24. The Accident (again the part about Davy geeting a free ride on the bus but meeting with an accident for his troubles)
"I lay there motionless concocting a plan
when someone whispered c'mon wee man
with great effort I opened my eyes
And didn't like the nasty surprise
big Dennis said "how are you feeling"
my diarrohea would take some healing."

Need I say more?
A really good, enjoyable book.

:D Check my website: www.glescapals.com/profiles/wneilly.htm and you'll see I also paint your pet from your favourite photo. :D

Here are some early examples of my own pets simply using pencil and cartridge paper.

It's hard to believe that the drawings of my cats are 25 years old and the drawing of my dog is 36 years old! If you look closely at the drawing of the dog you'll see it is dated 1973.

:D Can anybody remember a winter at Bridgeton Cross like the one shown in my painting ???

Looking southwards beyond the umbrella, Dalmarnock Road is to the left from which a number 46 motor bus from Castlemilk enters the cross. A motor vehicle emerges from Main Street behind the number 26 tracar en route to Scotstoun via Partick. James Street is located to the right of the taxi which is adjacent to Cockburn the Chemist and behind the pedal cyclist. The number 17 tramcar on the left is about to enter Dalmarnock Road en route to Cambuslang via Farme Cross. The snow covered cars heading south have entered the cross from Orr Street. The traffic policeman stops the flow of all traffic to enable pedestrians to cross over to the umbrella and also the slow moving horse and cart to cross over to the correct side of London Road, having just entered the cross from Olympia Street. The coalman and his horse and cart are heading along London Road towards Calton.

I felt extremely privileged recently when Glaswegian poet David Reilly contacted me. He asked if I would review his new book due out later this year and I was more than happy to oblige.

Those of you who know of David Reilly’s work will remember ‘Oot The Windae’, in which we travelled on his tramcar of rhyme through his recollections of being brought up in Glasgow in the 1950’s. He took us through his life, a life that lots of Glaswegians can relate to and he expertly relayed in verse stories about the ragman, the coalman, the steamie, the flitting, the polis, the middens and much more.

His new book is also titled ‘Oot the Windae’ but it’s a hard-back edition. You can read all his wonderful 1950’s poems as well as new ones about his memories of the 1960’s. He tells us the story of the ‘Upside Down Year’ and reminds us about the provy man’, swimming in the canal, gathering empty bottles for cash, New Year’s Eve and steak pie at midnight, The Barras, the second-hand bike, the bully etc. It is unbelievable how much he has managed to cram into this book about life in Glasgow in the 50’s and 60’s

I feel very honoured that David Reilly asked me to review his new release, which I can only describe as ‘sheer genius’. He has an extremely rare and wonderful talent in being able to get his message across in verse, reminding us of by-gone days mixed with happiness and sadness. I found his new book every bit as enjoyable as his last one, I was engrossed and just couldn’t put it down, his writing is so vivid and lifelike, it really was a journey back in time. You will laugh and cry as you reminisce your way through this excellent read of emotional turmoil and ecstatic joy. David has captured perfectly, his life and the lives of many Glaswegians during this era and what’s more, it’s all very skilfully written in rhyme.

You can see details on www.ootthewindae.net

:D You're so generous with your praise wilmabaird - thank you. :-*

My daughter has the Shambles framed under glass with a black mount and I must say, it looks very atmospheric. Much better than can be shown by an image posted on the MB. ;)

Hi William, I would just like to say how much I have enjoyed looking at your paintings, I especially like the black and white graphite sketches, it is many years since I was in York but your drawing of the Shambles is exactly like I remember it. Well done

:D My painting "Parkhead Railway Station 1962" was painted from a black and white photograph that was published in the Glasgow Evening Times. The acrylic painting on canvas board measures 406x305mm (approx. 16"x12")and was signed and dated by me in July 2009.

A passenger steam train en route to Carmyle from Bridgeton passes through the densely landscaped station that is overlooked by the tenements of Whitby Street. The tenements in the background are in Springfield Road at the junction with Janefield Street. Springfield steel foundry is on the left and the floodlights of Celtic Park are in the skyline.

The railway was in tunnel along the length of London Road emerging at Bridgeton Station before joining the Glasgow Central line tunnel. Parkhead Railway Station opened in the late 1890's to serve the east end of Glasgow. It was closed as part of Beeching's reform of the railways in the mid 1960's and was filled-in and landscaped over in 1989. ;)

;D My painting of "The Hay Cart" is an original acrylic painting on canvas board measuring 24" x 18" )approx. 610 x 455mm. It is after John Frederick Herring Snr (1795-1865) the well known English animal painter who painted the scene using oil on canvas measuring 12"x8".

;D I'm offering my original painting to the first glesca pal who appreciates a bargain when they see one and who contacts me with a reasonable offer. ;)

Thank you so much for your kind words Jamesy. Vince was a wonderful inspiration to me and gave me the confidence to go forward with my writing. Jim and I had some good times and great laughs with him over the years. He also wrote 'Harry Worth', do you remember when Harry used to stand at the shop window and raise his arm and leg mirror fashion? Vince used to do this as a kid and he had the idea to include it in the show, he copyrighted it and every time Harry Worth did it, Vince got a tenner. Vince enjoyed telling this story and it always made him chuckle. It was a great privilege to have known Vince and called him a friend.

Here is a wee link about Vince

I hope you will excuse me for using this thread but I feel it's quite apt. I am feeling devastated this evening, I have just had an email to tell me that my dear friend Vince Powell passed away this morning. Vince Powell was one of Britain's leading comedy writers and over the past thirty years, he created and wrote many highly successful comedies for television including .... George and the Dragon; Never Mind the Quality Feel the Width; Nearest and Dearest; For the Love of Ada; Love They Neighbour; Bless this House; Spring and Autumn; Mind Your Language; Young at Heart; Never the Twain .... to name but a few. In addition, Vince was a member of the original writing team for Coronation Street and Comedy Adviser to Thames Television for eight years.

Vince was my mentor and gave me great encouragement in my writing. He read through the manuscript for my first book (What's For Ye, Won't Go By Ye) just over 4 years ago and told me that it was very, very good and deserved to be published. He gave me a few hints on how to go about this and told me it wouldn't be easy but not to give in. I took his advice and now have two novels published, if it hadn't been for Vince, I would never have bothered.

The entertainment world has lost an extremely talented man today, I have a heavy heart this evening and will miss him.

R. I. P. my dear pal Vince, thank you for believing in me XXX

Hi Glesga Pals, Just to clarify things. I had written a sequal to OTW which I had called The Return Journey and it was ready to publish. I was never very happy with the quality of the presentation of the book so I decided not to publish.

It was always my intention to put the two books together and make it into an "omnibus" edition and this is exactly what the new edition is. As the webmaster has already commented on.
This is a LIMITED edition quality hand bound hardback which will be on sale exclusively on www.ootthewindae.net

I have around 80 copies to be sold to the general public before the main print run. It will be on a first come first served basis and my advice to those who are thinking of buying for someone else is DONT, buy it for yourself. I think this book is something special and I am extremely proud of the presentation and the stories contained.
